about

AT FIRST GLANCE, the story of The Quitters is not unfamiliar:
good songs, great live shows, a pair of independent cassettes, and ultimately - with no fanfare - a breakup. But it's the details that matter and that makes theirs a story worth telling.

Joe McCaffery and Christopher Truch were both part of the 80's underground scene in Calgary, having first met in 1979 deep in the suburbs of the city's southwest. They soon became close friends, but it wasn't until ten years later that their talents finally came together, with the years in between spent in bands including The Will,
The Now Feeling, The Ted Clark 5 and Joe 90.

By 1990, the two sidemen were ready to step out on their own,
looking back to the classic British Invasion sounds of the Stones,
The Beatles, The Who and The Kinks for inspiration. They formed
The Quitters with organist Cheryl Lancastle, bassist Pete Charuk, and drummer Ted Latimer, creating a sound that was out of step with their contemporaries. Alternating between adrenaline melodies and
ragged guitar workouts, fuzz organ and freakbeat rhythms, it was
more rock than punk.

The band had a modest amount of success during their brief run
from 1990 to 1992. They toured to Toronto, challenged themselves
to become better musicians, and made a lasting impression on their audiences. But with tensions within the band, some frustrating gigs, and a general failure to get across to a bigger audience,
The Quitters quit.

Hearing these remastered versions of their tapes some 20 years later is an absolute treat. The songs have new life and dynamics that their tapes never quite captured and reveal, beneath the hiss, an uncommon detail... timeless music. — Arif Ansari
